Always use a spotter.

spotterIt is difficult for a crane operator to observe the clearance between the crane and an overhead power line. Designate another worker to observe the clearance and to warn others if the minimum distance is not maintained. This should be the only job the spotter is performing when this hazardous condition is present.

Other basic safety procedures for crane operations near overhead power lines are:

• Know the locations of all overhead power lines at the job site before operating or working with a crane.
• Maintain a minimum clearance of 20 feet between the crane and any overhead power line.
• Make sure that overhead power lines are
de-energized or separated from the crane before work begins.
• Do not use cage-type boom guards, insulating links or proximity warning devices as a substitute for de-energizing and grounding lines or maintaining safe clearance.
• Operate cranes at a lower-than-normal rate in the vicinity of power lines.
• Keep all personnel well away from the crane whenever it is close to power lines.

Use a spotter when moving or erecting ladders, scaffolding and other construction equipment near overhead power lines.
